TEXT:           1Cor 14: 1 – 6.                       Part 10

by David Ogaga

“Put love first; but there are other gifts of the Spirit at which you should aim also, and above all …. Prophecy … What good shall I do you unless what I SAY contains something by way of revelation, or enlightenment, or prophecy, or INSTRUCTIONS? NEB

“Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and TAUGHT it to the children of Israel” Deut 31: 22.

“And He (Jesus) arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan; and the people resort unto Him again; and, as He was wont, He TAUGHT them again” Mk 10: 1.

The two Scriptures above explained the major principles with which the two Apostles of the two covenants communicated the divine will of God to the people they called to head and to have the church of God established.  They taught the people. Come to think of it, Moses didn’t just write a Song in rhythm or in a poetic form, but, he taught the people the very mind and implications of what the Song carried. It wasn’t just for recitation, it was a message that was to be learnt and understood for even in songs it was God talking to His people. How I wish our Music coordinators will begin to realize what role they ought to be playing within the Body of Christ in communicating the mind and intents of God to His people. Jesus on the other hand was to let the people know what God has to say about divorce, He took His time to explain what God has to say. He didn’t just preach about it, why?  The people need to understand, because true comprehension will produce absolute faith in the believer about God and what God wants. They taught the people!

In Eph 4: 17 – 24 we are told: “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind. Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard Him and have been TAUGHT by Him, as the truth is in Jesus. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness”  KJV. The above passage tells us that those who have been properly taught have a change of attitude about life. In other words, for you to depart from the old life, certain basic things have to be explained to you; and you must properly comprehend those facts. That is to say practical change about life and your faith or what is called Christianity cannot come until certain things are properly made known to you.  I really like the way the Amplified Translation puts Verse 23: “And be constantly renewed in the Spirit of you mind – having a fresh mental and Spiritual attitude”. And this agrees with the definition of the renewing of the Spirit of your mind. The word “Spirit” (Pneuma in Greek) means in this context, “Mental disposition, the rational soul”. Rational here is based on clear, practical or scientific reasons; that which is sensible to make decisions based on intelligent thinking rather than on emotions

So we see that the teaching ministry will bring you to a place of practical application of wisdom to your daily life and Living.  By implication it matures you both in thought and reasoning. Look at the way Paul puts it: “when I was a child, I talked like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I stopped those childish ways” (1Cor 13: 11) NCV.  Therefore we must admit that some of our Christian activities and attitude are still very childish because we lack proper spiritual education. So we are just zealous for nothing as a result of immaturity, as a result of wrong foundational teachings that result in the unskillfulness of the word of God.

In 2 Tim 4: 2-4, Paul told Timothy: “preach the Good News, Be ready at all times, and tell people what they need to do. Tell them when they are wrong. Encourage them with great patience and careful teaching. Because the time will come when people will not listen to the true teaching but will find many more teachers who please them by saying the things they want to hear.  They will stop listening to the truth and will begin to follow false stories” NCV. So the greatest problem of the Church of Jesus Christ is teachers and the people who love lies and false childish stories about who God is and what He can do for them. A God that is never angry and never punishes offences, no matter what you do; a God that is so powerless once the devil begins to operate in your life such that people know more of what the devil  and its power can do than what God can do. This is the present day Christian God. It is all the stories about the miracles they performed, whether true or not, and never a time had they faced difficulties or trials in life because they are serving a good God. With these false and pretentious testimonies, the faith of the young Christian is in the balance because when trouble shows up, then either they are not right with God or their God went on vacation. So the next thing is to locate Him in the home of prophets or in the extreme, go to the native doctors or astrologers.

“You seem so gullible, you believe whatever anyone tells you even if he is preaching about another Jesus than the one we preach or a different spirit than the Holy Spirit you received, or shows you a different way to be saved. You swallowed it all” 2Cor 11: 4 TLB

“Preaching about another Jesus” What does that mean?  Look at it as to the announcement of the birth of Christ, the word says: “She (Mary) will bear a son, and you will call His Name JESUS (in Hebrew it means saviour) for he will save His people from their sins (that is, prevent their falling and missing the true end and scope of life which is God)” Math 1: 21 AMP.  Friends, this is very significant. The true Gospel is that which prevents men from failing in God’s expectation of and for men in relation to the sin question; that they might live a righteous life so that ultimately they might live as God lives. In other words, if God were to be in a human form, living among men what will He do or how will His life affect others?  What will His attitude or character be like? This then is the Goal of man kind, to be as God. Therefore any preaching or Teaching that cannot make you more Godly, and as such prevent you from constant sinning is another Gospel. Any Gospel that emphasizes ceremonies and Christian rituals, even celebrations, instead of targeting the recovery of our souls from mental corruption and heart darkness is another Gospel. Any teaching that emphasizes more of materialism, which is sensual, and the fear of evil powers; magnifying the work of the devil more than the power of God is another Gospel. For as you set your heart on materialism, you will continuously live in agitation and anxiety thereby losing the rest to your soul coupled with the fear of the devil making you to lose all things and prevent your success in life without the understanding that “Greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world” (1 Jn. 4: 4). Note it: you don’t belong to the world, so he that rules the world cannot rule you. He can only fool you through your mind. Compare 1Cor 5: 1-5, 2Cor 10-11; 11: 1-4.
